tracking HTML email from workflow

Does anyone know if it's possible to embed the tracking image into an email template that is used for workflow?  We send out followup emails to mass sends and our sales team's sole metric revolves around calling leads who have opened the email more than X number of times.

I've tried Lead Follow-up which is fine for lead nurturing but they have no stats about how many times a recipient has opened an email.  Sales has been using that metric to decide who to call first and I can easily automate the whole process with workflow for them except there seems to be no way to track how many times the email was opened without putting some type of tracking image in it.

Jason,

Are you able to automatically send emails to Leads from WorkFlow? I was told you can do this but it is not obvious to me how you would send an email to a lead. Appreciate any guidance you can provide.

As for tracking number of opens, I don't belive this is available in SF. We used Manticore for this but its expensive.

Re: tracking HTML email from workflow

you can automatically send email alerts to leads in salesforce.  You would need to create a workflow rule to send the alert, but something has to trigger that.

I've done things in the past where I've created a checkbox for sales and whenever that box gets checked on the Lead record, it invokes a workflow rule to send out an alert.  That's probably the closest I've come to automating stuff.

Re: tracking HTML email from workflow

As the publisher of Lead Follow-Up, I have only just noticed this thread, and the statement by Jason ('...fine for lead nurturing but they have no stats about how many times a recipient has opened an email. ...).

In fact, Lead Follow-Up does have this capability - providing the last date/time the email was opened in addition to the open count. It also has click-through counts and last date/time clicked through for up to 10 links in an email.

Please know that I am not trying to 'plug' Lead Follow-Up - only to correct this information.
