missing new button on cases related list in opportunities

I added an opportunities lookup field in the cases page layout with the goal being to create cases from opportunities.  The cases related list on the opportunity detail page doesn't have any buttons.  I've already checked security permissions and looked at the page layout section options.  Any ideas?
