Feeding Salesforce to the Website- Member Directories, Login, etc.

The main issue for us for leaving our old db and changing to salesforce.com is this obstacle:

We have a membership of 2500.  Our current db has a live feed to the website that updates a membership directory with fields from the website.

Members are able to login, update their profile, have exclusive access to articles and publications, and puruse the membership directory.

How would this work with salesforce.com?  Would we have to purchase portal licenses for all our members?  Is this something that would be handled by a "customer"-like portal?  How have others achieved this?
