Thanks. I have logged it as a bug with the Case Number 02851586. In the mean time I will have to temporarily remove Case Owner from the Page Layout.

Well, you can whip up that Apex trigger and custom field in the meantime. That shouldn't be too difficult.

Why dont you just make a formula field that is equal to your Case Owner field and display that on your customer portal?
