Setting deadline reminders

Hi all.  The Grant record type includes two deadline date fields.  Is there anyway to set a notification email or calendar entry for the user?  A workflow rule will create a task or send an email, but it won't create a calendar entry in SF that could be sync'ed with Outlook.  Another problem with workflow rules is that they don't fire unless the record is created or edited, so if the record doesn't change at all, the deadline could pass and no email would be sent.

I've done this before. When a certain event occurs, a Calendar Event in Salesforce.com is automatically created and assigned to a specific User's account.
