Mass Update Contact Owners

Is there a way to mass update the owners of contacts easily? I have tried exporting a list into excel then changing them and then importing it but it doesn't work, we are using professional edition.

I think the Excel Connector works with Professional Edition..

Why not use Setup > Data Management > Mass Transfer Records ?

I haven't tried it, but that looks easy.

you can't use that to mass transfer contacts, just accounts.

Oh right.  Duh.  Sorry. 

I just did this (updated OwnerID on contact and donation records) using the Apex Data Loaders' Upsert feature.  Worked like a charm.

Thanks for that but we are using professional edition and thats not available on professional I don't think is it? If so then please explain more!!

Hmmmm... well now that you mention it, I'm using the Enterprise edition, so maybe you don't have this with Professional.  I found it in Setup > Administration Setup > Data Management > Data Loader > Download Apex Data Loader

If you don't see this, I guess it's not available with Professional, although it may be worth a call to SF.  Sorry to lead you astray.

Use the mass update button on selected records, select ownerId field, and enter the new owner Id as the value (you can get owner id from the url of user detail page).

The new version of DemandTools includes a tool for updating the owenership on any object (plus sub-objects if you like).  It also will create tasks for any changed ownership and you can define the ownership criteria any way you like.  www.crmfusion.com/demandtools
