We recently discovered that some of our donations have lost their connection to the donor (contact). The only thing I can think of is that either a merge or a deletion caused this. As a result we began thinking of ways to correct this and realized that this is something that should be available in case of errors, etc. There is a simple way of changing the Organization connected to the donation...but not to the contact. As a non-profit, most of our entries are from individual donors and it is imperative to have this information readily available for each donor.
I tried to add a contact field which worked to a certain extent...except then we have donations and "opportunities" on the contact page rather than just donations.
Any ideas?

Donations (just a renamed Opportunity object) is connected to Contacts via an object called Contact Roles. Contact Roles connect a person to a gift with a certain Role, like "donor" or "solicitor". If that data isn't there, the Contact won't have a connection to the Donation.
You can also do what you mentioned--create a direct lookup to Contact on the Donation object. When you create that lookup field, you can name the related list. Edit that field and you can change it from "Opportunity" to something else that makes sense to you.
