Trying to figure out Round Robin

Hi, we are brand new to salesforce and just setting up our system.   Our sales people are not set up by region.  We are a Contact Center.   If a new opportunity is created by one of our Service Reps and there is already an open Opportunity for that client open in salesforce, we wanted the system to automatically assign this new Opportunity to that same sales rep.  We do not want our Service Reps to have to look to see if there is an open Opportunity and manually assign it.  Has anyone found a way to do something similar to this?  Thanks for any help you can give us.

Nina,
If you are using Enterprise Edition or Higher, you can accomplish this using Apex trigger - which can search for account's opportunities and assign to that owner if found.
