EmailMessage Status

Hello,

 

I am able to query or retrieve an emailmessage through SOQL but this is not causing the email status of a new message to be changed to read. I also know that status is a read only property, so SalesForce must change it automatically. What action must be taken to cause SalesForce to change the email status to read?
