I'm looking for good ways to manage my contacts when they go silent. Ideally i would like to put them back into my lead pool for nurturing but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this and keep all activity.

You can try managing using list views. You can create a contact list view that says "last activity" is not equal to and then you can use a series of special date values depending on your critieria of "going silent". here is a link to the list of special date values (if you are not logged in to salesforce then you will be prompted to login first - this is from the help documentation: Special Date Values
hope this helps.
