Solution for handling "out of office" situations with a round-robin assignment

We have a client requirement that Cases be assigned using the "round robin" formula in Help & Training. However, the client also wants users to be excepted from the round-robin assignment if they set an "out of office" timeframe on their user record.

Has any else encountered similar requirements, and have you solved it in any automated fashion? (other than manually editing the assignment rules whenever someone is unavailable for case assignment)
