If an Opportunity is created from a Lead (by converting the Lead), then the Opportunity Campaign will be populated automatically with the most recent Campaign from the Lead (that's the simple explanation - see Help and Training for the detailed explanation of the effect of the Campaign Member Status).
As of the Spring 08 release that occurred this month, Opportunities created by clicking the "New" button on the Opportunity related list of a Contact will work the same way (the most recent Campaign on the Contact will populate the Opportunity Campaign field).
Opportunities created by clicking the "New" button on the Opportunity tab or the "New" button on the Opportunity related list of an Account will not automatically be populated with a Campaign. You'll have to decide your own best practice for this scenario. Making the Opportunity Campaign field required has its pros and cons, as you know.

Lead conversion is a great way to link opportunities to campaigns for leads, but what about campaigns for existing contacts? I'm handling an upsell campaign for existing contacts and need a way to relate new opportunities to that campaign. Is there any way to automate this using dates?
For example, contact X at company Y is related to a campaign. If a new opportunity related to company Y is created, it would be great if SFDC recognized that contact X was part of a campaign whose start date/end date range coincides with when the opportunity was created, and created the relationship between the opportunity and the campaign automatically.
Anyone have any ideas about this?
