Campaign Lead Source Management

I am trying to figure out the best way to set up my campaigns and can't seem to find any tips on the specifics of multiple lead sources.  For example, am running a campaign to promote a white paper.  I am promoting it through mass email, partners, and the website.  Should this all be one campaign with multiple campaign member lead sources? Or should I use campaign hierarchies for this?

One challenge arises from the fact that I want to track multiple touch points (lead sources) for each lead.  My current lead source field on the lead record is just a text box so it doesn't not accommodate multiple sources.  So when that same lead is part of another campaign I would have to overwrite their lead source to track it to the new campaign.

I just tried to create a custom field on the campaign member layout but it seems like it will be difficult to import and display this field throughout the process.

What should I try next?

Best practice is to create an Offer object for the white paper, and use the Campaign as the communication channel.

Here's a lot more detail on how this might work:

Benefits are that you can track the white paper results across campaigns, and makes it easy to do reporting & A/B testing.
