Activity custom field tracking

Hello,

I have created a picklist field in Activites called "Classification", which categorises the sales team's activities (eg. chasing meeting, proposal sent, no action) to make them easier for reporting on.  I want to track this field, so we can see how people are progressing with tasks, however there is no "Set History Tracking" button in the activity custom field set up.  Is there a way to track this field, or is it being tracked automatically?

Unfortunately you can't tracking any fields in Activity.

 

However what you want to do seems to be deal with in Opportunity stage, which can be  automatically tracked. Otherwise you have to build a custom object to perform the special function as you said.
