Account-Product and Opportunity-Product questions

Two questions:

1. Is it possible to customize the Opportunity-Product record with Custom Fields?  I would, for example, like to have a set of software applications as Products, and track the number of potential licenses on a by-Product basis, rather than at the Opportunity level.

2. Is it possible to associate Products with Accounts?  I would like to be able to determine which Accounts have purchased which Products.

I've searched Help and these forums for similar questions, to no avail.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can create custom Opportunity Product fields, and you can link Products to an Account using Assets.

Opportunity Product doesn't seem to use a standard page layout. Any idea how to get custom fields to show up when adding an Opportunity Product, e.g. this URL https://na1.salesforce.com/oppitm/multilineitem.jsp ?

I think if you edit the Multi-Line layout on the Opportunity Product Page layout you should be all set.

The layout on the screenshot above does not match the current selected fields in the multi line page layout. Inventory Location is selected but not showing
